“We relied on each other to survive” – Montane Winter Spine Challenger North
A true demonstration of the race spirit amongst the Spine family...
Tim Bradley and G Brian Hutchinson have won the Montane Winter Spine Challenger North in a true demonstration of the race spirit amongst the Spine family.
Tim had a strong start to the race and enjoyed a significant lead but a bad fall before Bellingham made him question whether to continue. He took a long break at Horneystead Farm not knowing whether to continue. He said if he’d seen a race official, he would have quit.
The pair took on the final stage together. “The Cheviots was a two-person job. We took it in turns to break the trail.” said Tim. G Brian added “We relied on each to survive. This was teamwork, not a race.”
Points on the trail were waist-deep in snow, with strong winds and temperatures dropping to – 17 degrees overnight. The pair were in good spirits at the finish but happy to have a hot drink and shower to warm up!
The race has taken its toll on the runners with 43% of the field deciding not to continue. First woman Irene Kinnegim is currently making her way over the Cheviots after a long rest in a refuge hut overnight. Irene and John Murray have also formed a partnership in joint 3rd place overall.
The Montane Winter Spine Challenger North is a 160-mile race up the Pennine Way from Hardraw to Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders.
Spine Race continues…
We currently have a battle for the lead between Damian Hall and Jack Scott. Jack has incurred a time penalty for a navigational error that gave him an advantage. It should be an exciting end to the race.
