SunGod Ultras – Test and Review

"The quality is stunning and my vision in sunglasses has never been as crystal clear."

SunGod Ultras

First off there are such great customisation possibilities available at SunGod. I must be an ultra-sunglasses newbie as I didn’t realise (in my most vivid of dreams) that there would be such a choice of dedicated sports eye wear.

SunGod are Carbon Neutral, 1% for the Planet as well as a B Corp company which basically means they’re sustainable through-and-through, and put through their paces on many areas such as recycling, charity partnerships and lifetime guarantees.

I managed to spent at least a couple of hours (maybe more) trying different variations until I selected the final version. It was easy to choose and design my own personal set of Ultras and is a feature I’d never encountered before – so it was pretty enjoyable, hence the amount of time I spent doing it. Seen as they are a statement piece and I would be using them predominantly when out running and race training in sunnier weather or climates, I decided to go with full-on bright colours and styling! Who else will have a pair just like this – not many. Another bonus in my eyes!

SunGod come across as very slick and professional, and resonate high quality. The website is top-notch, clear to navigate and it’s easy to browse their range of sunglasses. The tech on offer is actually quite unbelievable. The Ultras range has 10 to choose from (8 refined lens tints and 2 Iris photochromic lenses), plus their customisation option, and all come with 8KO lenses – the most advanced lens technology on the planet.

Ultra runner Tom Evans is a fan…

“I’ve spent countless hours testing and trying out different options, and the 8KO lenses in the SunGod Ultras are unlike anything I’ve ever tried.”

From here I found the design process and selection straight-forward with enough information about the different options to help me to make my decisions. Of course you can always have more choice and customisation but I feel there’s more than enough. My only suggestion is perhaps more images of the different sunglasses on ‘real people’ would be helpful so I can see what they look like out and about. I finally chose Matte Pink frame, 8KO Green lenses, Brushed Gold icon with GripLock Mint earsocks.

Anyway, fast-forward to their super fast delivery, and I liked the simple yet practical box they came in. Which I’ve actually used several times when throwing them in my big kit bag for extra protection. They come in a microfibre pouch too (made out of 100% recycled plastic bottles) which is dual-purpose for cleaning them. It’s handy and folds up small enough to keep in a spare pocket. The box also contains extra nose grips in 3 sizes so you can try on and choose the best one for you. The Ultras themselves are frameless, not your standard design, lightweight and impactful. After trying them on and changing the nose grip, I finally took them for a run.

Straight off they were comfortable and I knew I was wearing great eyewear. The quality is stunning and my vision in sunglasses has never been as crystal clear. They were also bounce-free. Super secure. Even when going on the up and down hills on the Sandstone Trail going across to Helsby Hill. Occasionally I felt like I needed to push them up my nose again so either I need to check the nose grips or go out on less bumpy trails.

They worked great guns in the bright sun when I went early-morning running on the roads and onto the Trans-Pennine Trail, and all around and to the sides of my eyes not a peep of sunlight got through. Initially I kept checking the clarity and for any major colour change difference. Honestly I didn’t notice any vivid filter, on and off I kept trying to see, at the treelines and grassy vistas, but they were great. I felt a discernible clarity of focus that really enhanced my running experience.

A little bit of face sweat didn’t bother them too, the arms didn’t budge and there was no frame to wipe down. Airflow worked well in-between the nose grips so they didn’t fog up the lenses.

I’d be very happy to stick with the Ultras for a long, long time and it’s a good job as they have a lifetime guarantee, replacement kits available if I need them and 100% UV protection which is a must have. Oh and did I mention that Courtney Dauwalter is also a Team SunGod ambassador. The ultra runner super kit essential.
