NNormal ultra running shoes review

NNormal’s first gear is here

Pre-orders go live today for the new outdoor sports brand – born from a partnership between Camper and Kilian Jornet. High-performance footwear, apparel, and accessories can all be ordered now.

NNormal is the result of a partnership between the world-renowned mountaineer and trail runner Kilian Jornet, and family-owned footwear company Camper.

NNormal’s products are all born from a strong belief that being active and pushing limits outdoors can go hand-in-hand with enjoying and respecting nature. Above all else, they want to do things differently – to resist fads and fashions, and to create gear that performs at the highest standards and is as durable as it gets.

Launching alongside the products themselves is a brand campaign, shot by Marvin Leuvrey in Norway, that was created to emphasise the ‘leave no trace’ philosophy behind the gear. Shot with a light, ephemeral feel, the images show athletes in and of the natural environments they’re running through. Part of it, rather than taking from it. The idea is to play with the codes of performance, which often use both blurred and frozen moments, but in a different way: nature, which is everlasting, is indeed sharp when the athletes are blurry. We are just passing through, leaving no trace behind.

Named Kjerag and Tomir, the two shoe collections at the heart of this launch are great examples of outdoor gear that’s both high-performing and kinder for the planet – by putting durability ahead of passing trends and being designed to be as circular as possible. The brand’s tagline, ‘Your Path, No Trace’, runs through everything they do. Above all else, the guiding principle is: no compromises. Not on quality. Not for design. Not for anything.

As well as innovative and sustainable production approaches, NNormal has joined two initiatives that help guarantee their intentions to do good: 1% for the planet, and the B Corp program. Both these organisations help demonstrate that NNormal wants to be held to higher standards, every step of the way.

Kjerag – NNormal’s max-performance trail running shoe

Kjerag is a mountain on the west coast of Norway. With a peak of 1,110m, it’s not the most spectacular mountain, but the view from the top is one of the most beautiful in the world.

“Our goal when designing Kjerag was to create a shoe that can be worn for every kind of race, from a VK to a 100-mile run,” explains Kilian Jornet, who collaborated intensely on the design of the shoe. “Making it comfortable on the feet when we run was a priority. As was giving people the chance to give everything they’ve got, via a shoe that you don’t feel. That means when you’re running, it’s so comfortable you forget them. There are no pressure points on the feet. And the shoes follow the natural movement of the foot, preventing muscle tiredness and blisters as you adapt to the shoe. The shoe adapts to you.”

Tomir – Strength and versatility

Tomir is a mountain in the Serra de Tramuntana in Mallorca. From tricky traverses to mythical limestone formations, moving scree slopes to changeable weather – Tomir is a mountain that packs a lot in.

That’s why NNormal knew they had to name this range of shoes after it. Born from their intense passion for getting people outside and active, Tomir is the only shoe you need for hitting advanced trail running routes, weekend race-prep training – and just about every other activity.

“With Tomir, we want to give everyone the confidence and support to do every outdoor activity, no matter the terrain or the occasion,” explains Kilian Jornet. “Our goal was to create a shoe that can be worn by anyone, no matter their level – making it comfortable on the feet and feeling secure and protected on any terrain.”

Apparel & accessories

Launching alongside the shoes is a high-performing range of apparel. From hydration vests to organic hoodies, race caps to Merino compression socks – head to nnormal.com to discover the full range. The products will also be available in Europe, US and Canada in specialized stores and normal.com from October 13th.

About NNormal

We’re an outdoor sports brand, born between the shores of Mallorca and the Fjords of Norway. Our products reflect the common philosophy between Camper and Kilian Jornet, the two partners at the origin of NNormal: sustainability and performance, that inspire people to enjoy and respect nature. A mission expressed through timeless gear that’s functional, performance-oriented, and built to last. All the outdoor equipment was designed in Mallorca and tested in Norway, as hinted in the name of the brand (Nor-way + Mal-lorca).

Kilian Jornet

Kilian Jornet is considered one of the best mountain athletes in the world. For the last 15 years, he has dominated the ski mountaineering and trail running scene, winning all major championships and races across the globe. Growing up in a hut in the Spanish Pyrenees, the mountains have always been his playground, whether running, climbing or skiing. As a pluridisciplinar athlete, he also holds speed records in mountains around the world, including
a double ascent to Mount Everest. Nowadays, Kilian lives in Norway where he continues to explore his limits in mountain sports and inspiring a large community with movies, books and digital content. Kilian has also become a climate advocate working to raise awareness about environmental protection.

Camper

Camper is a family business that’s been working together since 1877, when Antonio Fluxa,
a shoe craftsman, brought together a group of craftsmen in Inca, Mallorca, and introduced
the first shoemaking machines. Founded in 1975 by Lorenzo Fluxa, Antonio’s grandson,
Camper built an original brand with quality, comfort, and innovation through a contemporary design. Meaning “peasant” in Mallorquin, a local dialect, Camper embraces the austerity, simplicity and discretion of the Mediterranean. A respect for art and craftsmanship anchors
the brand’s promise to create timeless, high-quality products with a consideration of the
social and environmental impact of each. Today operating in more than 50 countries,
CEO Miguel Fluxa, 4th generation of the family-owned company, leads a diverse creative team embracing change and exploring every aspect of design, developing useful and unexpected solutions to create a better quality product.

1% for the Planet

The non-profit organisation was launched in 2002 in the United States by Yvon Chouinard, founder and owner of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, former owner of Blue Ribbon Flies.
Each member company commits to donate 1% of its sales with their respective companies.
The network has already donated $350 million to environmental organisations.

B Corp

B Corp Certification is a designation that a business is meeting high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials. In order to achieve certification, a company must:

  • Demonstrate high social and environmental performance by achieving a B Impact Assessment score of 80 or above and passing our risk review. Multinational corporations must also meet baseline requirement standards.
  • Make a legal commitment by changing their corporate governance structure to be accountable to all stakeholders, not just shareholders, and achieve benefit corporation status if available in their jurisdiction.
  • Exhibit transparency by allowing information about their performance measured against
B Lab’s standards to be publicly available on their B Corp profile on B Lab’s website.
