NNormal Tomir – Test & Review

Finally, after a long time waiting to recover from an ankle injury, I have been able to try the NNormal Tomir. These are the second shoe to be developed between ultra running legend Kilian Jornet and footwear company Camper.
Initially they seem a pretty bulky shoe (they’re actually surprisingly light with a weight of about 250 grams) compared to other models I’ve tested for UltraRunner Magazine! However, slip your feet in and everything changes. The first few miles around Delamere Forest in Cheshire laid any doubts to rest.
The NNormal Tomir have an asymmetrical lacing system, which I normally wouldn’t choose, but I genuinely found that they reduced the pressure I often feel with shoes with a higher drop (these are 8mm).
The traction on the ‘wet stuff’ is pretty good thanks to the 5mm lugs. You’ll still slip and slide in deeper mud, but that’s not what these are designed for.
Personally, I prefer a wider toebox to allow my toes to spread. The box on the Tomir is slightly narrower than what I would normally opt for

EVA foam midsole
The midsole of these NNormal Tomir shoes includes EVA foam. A material that offers comfort and a sufficient level of cushioning to cope with covering long-distances, all whilst being extremely lightweight. I found this really gives confidence when doing sessions on uneven ground!
I normally need quite a few miles behind me before feeling confident in a shoe (due to a tendency to roll ankles), however I got to grip with these quicker than expected.
Strong upper
Combining lightness, comfort and durability, the upper of the Tomir from NNormal is constructed from very strong, lightweight materials sewn into the midsole, this feels strong and is claimed to provide added strength against abrasion and potential tears. Only time and miles will confirm this.
Vibram Megagrip+ Litebase
The outsole has an exclusive compound that it is claimed to be 30% lighter and up to 50% thinner than other compounds. There’s no doubt that they are light! They are also pretty stiff with stability provided by their 5 mm lugs.
For a ‘do it all’ shoe, the NNormal Tomir are a really good trail running shoe.
