Packing for an ultra running trip

Have you been dreaming about taking on the challenge of competing in an ultra race in another country? Be prepared. There are a few things you will need to take into account before making your big move abroad. First and foremost, make sure that you have all the right gear for your trip! The race event organisers will have sent you a mandatory kit checklist so make sure you read this very carefully.

Packing well is absolutely essential if you want to guarantee success both physically and mentally. Read on for some helpful tips on finding the perfect items to bring along so that nothing can stand between you and that finish line!

1. A valid passport and visa
2. A race entry confirmation
3. Plane tickets
4. Hotel booking (for both the start and finish points if they’re different!)
5. Travel insurance
6. Drivers license
7. Credit card and local currency
8. Running clothes
9. Running shoes
10. A hat or visor
11. Gloves
12. Sunscreen and sunglasses
13. Personal items and toiletries
14. Race nutrition
15. Map and/or GPS watch

Here are some of the must-have items that ultra runners should bring with them:

Running Clothes
Having running gear that fits the climate of where the race is taking place is essential. For example, if you’re running in a tropical climate, running shorts and a breathable running shirt is essential, because high temperatures will require lightweight clothing that protects your skin from the sun without leading to excessive sweating. No matter where you’re running, layering your clothes is always important. Start with a base layer of running gear such as running leggings for cooler climates or running shorts for warmer environments. On top of this, bring warm-weather items such as a windbreaker or light hoodie depending on the weather forecasted during race week – these pieces should keep you warm enough but not too hot when running long distances. Also don’t forget to pack a well-fitted vest that won’t chafe you above your clothes.

Running Shoes
Your running shoes are arguably the most important item on this list. Be sure to pack a pair that are worn-in, comfortable and designed for the terrain you’ll be tackling. If there’s different terrain involved, eg, trail and road you might be best taking 2 pairs. You don’t want to be caught in the middle of an ultra race with the wrong type of running shoe!

Socks
Be sure to pack several pairs of socks, as you will likely go through several during an ultra race. It’s also a good idea to bring along some body glide or other anti-chafing product to prevent blisters.

Sports Bras
They can be difficult to find in some countries, so it is better to be safe than sorry. You may also want women’s running shorts with built-in underwear for added support during the race.

Hydration Pack or Bottles
An ultra race will test your endurance like nothing else, so it’s important to stay hydrated throughout the event. Be sure to pack a hydration pack/bladder or water bottles (or both!) so that you can stay properly hydrated during the race. A vest will keep a bottle, nutrition and other small items safely on you whilst your running.

Race Nutrition
In addition to staying hydrated, you’ll also need to fuel your body during an ultra race. Be sure to pack enough food and snacks to last you throughout the event. Gels, bars, and other easily digestible foods are ideal for ultra runners.

Poles
Running over mountain trails may requires poles with a securely adjustable length, lightweight and of strong construction. Your running poles should be able to handle terrain changes, like slippery rocks or fallen logs, with equal ease. Look for running poles made with tough lightweight aluminium and grips that are comfortable for long distances.

Headlamp
If you’re racing in an unfamiliar place, be sure to pack a headlamp or flashlight so you can see where you’re going if the race takes place at night or in low-light conditions.

Hat & Sunglasses
A hat or visor can help keep the sun out of your eyes, while sunglasses will protect your eyes from the glare of the sun off the pavement. Make sure to pack both items if you plan on running during daylight hours.

Personal Items
You’ll also want to pack some personal items, such as toiletries and medications. Be sure to pack any prescription medications you take, as well as over-the-counter drugs like ibuprofen and antacid tablets. You might also want to pack a first aid kit, lip balm, sunscreen, and insect repellent if these items are not readily available at your destination.

Travelling overseas for an ultra running event can be intimidating but with proper preparation, including packing all the right gear, you’ll be ready to take on whatever challenge lies ahead! By following this guide, you’ll have everything you need for an enjoyable and successful race experience abroad!

Good luck!
