Ultra running adventure abroad
From breathtaking landscapes, tranquil vistas and unforgettable cultures and new customs, there is something truly special about going on a long run in another country. It’s the perfect opportunity to gather up friends or family members and embark on a memorable journey of discovery!
We start with a handful of beautiful destinations…

The Pyrenees Mountains, Spain
One of the most popular spots for ultra running in Spain. As you run through this stunning mountain range, you will be surrounded by forests and spectacular views overlooking valleys and rivers below. You can find trails of varying difficulty levels that range from short loops to multi-day races such as The Camino de Santiago Ultra Trail Race or The TransPyrenees Race.

The Vosges Mountains, France & Germany
Another great place for ultra runners is the Vosges Mountains located on France’s eastern border with Germany. Here, runners can find long-distance routes that traverse both lowland forests and high-altitude mountain passes. While this area may not have quite as much elevation as the Alps, it still offers plenty of challenges for those who seek them out. Plus, its stunning natural beauty makes it well worth exploring!

Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, USA

This iconic national park offers some of the most breathtaking views in the country, making it a great place for those looking for a scenic route. The most popular route is along the South Kaibab Trail, which stretches for about 9 miles from the South Rim to Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the canyon. You can also find longer routes that take you through more of the park and its surrounding areas, such as Havasu Falls or Deer Creek Falls.

Mt. Fuji, Japan
Mt. Fuji is the most iconic mountain in all of Japan, and it’s also one of the best places to go ultra running. The base of Mt. Fuji is easily accessible by train from Tokyo and Osaka, making it a great option for weekend trips or longer adventures. There are several routes that you can take up the mountain depending on your skill level, from relatively easy paths to more challenging ones with steep inclines and declines so there’s something for everyone here!

This mountain range has something for everyone, from gentle rolling hills to steep ascents. All set against breathtaking views of azure waters and mountainous peaks. On this route, you’ll find plenty of other outdoor activities such as kayaking, cycling, and rock climbing as well as villages where you can rest and refuel with delicious Turkish cuisine before continuing on your adventure.

Arenal Volcano National Park, Costa Rica
One of the most popular destinations in Costa Rica. It features tropical vegetation, stunning mountain views, and plenty of challenging trails. The park is home to the active Arenal Volcano and the dormant Chato Volcano peak. There are multiple routes that you can choose from depending on your skill level, but all will provide an amazing adventure with a bit of a challenge.

This 37-mile route takes ultra runners through one of the most beautiful and unique landscapes in the world. The trail passes through thick green pastures, purple mountains, black sand beaches, and bubbling hot springs. Along the way you’ll also encounter steaming volcanoes and breathtaking glaciers. With such varied terrain, it’s no wonder that this trail is one of the most popular routes in Iceland!

The Himalayas, Nepal
Last but not least, we have one of the most iconic locations on earth. This region is home to numerous peaks over 8,000m (26246 ft) high – making it one of the toughest places on Earth for ultra runners! Despite its difficulty however it also offers incredibly beautiful scenery as well as unique cultural experiences that can’t be found anywhere else in the world, making it worth every step! Depending on which route you choose here expect plenty of snow-capped mountains and extreme terrain – not suitable for beginners!
