Just an hour’s drive from Manchester, the peak district is a great way for city dwellers to explore the north of England. Take in some of the most picturesque parts of Derbyshire, which extends into Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Staffordshire, West Yorkshire, and South Yorkshire.

1. Back to Back Tor

If you’re looking for something a little more exposed and remote. The Back-to-Back Tor is an excellent option. Considered a difficult hiking route with 420m of ascent, the 12km route traverses steep paths with difficult terrain, including roots and rocks.

2. Derwent Reservoir Loop

This 20km route has a healthy 551m of ascent and a combination of good paths and roads. It’s a great training route as it’s an excellent non-technical hike with relatively easy navigation.
