Navigation for Runners – Ashley Charlwood

These wonderful maps we have can tell us so much more

Navigation For Runners

We’ve all been there – this doesn’t look right; this doesn’t feel right. At this point it’s likely that you or your mates end up with a story to tell.

When we run into wild spaces, or new spaces, navigation is a critical skill to keep you safe. In fact, it’s the first thing on the “BeAdventureSmart” list of things to do. It’s here because nearly 20% of Mountain Rescue callouts are due to a navigation error.

But, as runners we’ve got the GPX downloaded on the watch, or even better we’re with someone that knows the route. So that navigation error won’t be you (says 1 in 5 people picked up by the MR volunteers).

But this kind of misses the point. Staying on track is only one part of navigating.
