Jack Scott wins the Montane Spine Race in a phenomenal 72:55:05, obliterating the previous record set by Jasmin Paris by around 10 hours.

Scott, who holds records at the 100-mile Lakes, Meres & Waters challenge, has used his love of ultra running to help beat a gambling addiction that was previously controlling his life.

Since the Spine began on Saturday morning, Jack has held a front position alongside James Nobles, Damian Hall and Kim Collison, pulling away in the latter half of the race to seek glory. Having slept for less than an hour over those 72 hours, Jack crossed the finish line at 9:10am on Wednesday morning, placing his hands against the wall and bowing his head.

Looking weather-beaten but speaking strong he said at the finish line: “I had to win the mind game really early on in the training.”

“I tried to take the front in the beginning with Konrad [Rawlik] and Kim [Collison] but I had to pull back and slow down. I got bad at mile 85 at Mallum and I nearly DNF. I was not in a good place. I Slowed it down and took control of my race.”

He described a 12-15 hours where he sat with James Nobles as enjoyable as they picked people off. However, “I left Middleton checkpoint with Damien and James, and I’m just thinking, how am I going to win this race? So I started to get a lead and try to hold it.”

Losing Damian Hall on the climb around Greg’s Hut Checkpoint, James took his chance and decided to carry on pushing until the finish.

Describing his emotions, he said, “It was an elite performance, and I’m incredibly proud.”

The Spine Race Continues with Damian Hall, Claire Bannwarth and Conrad Rawlik all still on track to place podium at the Spine Race 2024.
