Ultra Scotland competitors arrived at the start line at 0600hrs unaware of what the weather had in store for them. The event was running in its superb fashion but as the event moved into the night the weather conditions worsened. Many of the 50 milers who started at the same time as the 100 milers finished their event but with 100 milers still battling the course and the weather changing, GBultras race director Wayne Drinkwater made the decision to activate the low-level route plan.
This was to keep runners off high points of the course where the winds were strongest. Unfortunately, it became clear, even the low routes couldn’t avoid the Scottish weather so a decision had to be made.
Due to Severe Weather Warnings with wind speeds of up to 60mph on the Southern Upland Way mountains, and the temperature dropping #GBUltras Race Director Wayne Drinkwater took the decision to cancel the 100-mile race to ensure runner safety based on the up to date mountain weather reports and advice from mountain rescue and event medics…
The remaining Ultra Scotland 50 mile and 100-mile runners continued onto their new finish line in Moffat … Runners were looked after by the event team personnel and also intercepted on the trail. Everybody we have spoken to agreed that this was the right decision a decision I’m sure wasn’t taken lightly. Well done GBultras for making the right decision.
