Training for an Ultramarathon – Emma Marks

A strong training plan factors in the important elements of the end goal - Emma Marks

Ultramarathon running is rapidly growing in its popularity as a sport.  From the competitive athlete racing for their spot on the podium, to the wilful and determined runner pushing boundaries to discover how far their bodies and their minds will carry them.

To run an ultra, having a strong mind to get to the finish line is somewhat more of an important attribute required by the participating runner than athleticism.  Although having a good level of fitness certainly helps!!

An ultra-marathon is any distance that is over the 26.2 miles or 42 kms marathon distance and if you have been toying with the idea of running your first Ultra, I would recommend that you should have ran at least 1 marathon before signing yourself up to running an ultra, or have a marathon booked in 2-3 months before your ultra event. Most races will ask details of previous marathon dates and finish times in the pre-requisites on the race entry form.

Following a training programme is the most sure-fire way to get you to the finish line, race ready and injury free, there are many generic and downloadable training plans out there that anyone can get hold of and follow, hiring a running coach will mean that your running programme is bespoke to your fitness levels and capabilities, and will factor in your home life and work commitments, race goals, hold you accountable for your training and can be adaptable when needed.
