Preventing injury

How I personally manage training load & injury as an ultrarunner & Physio.

50% of all runners will experience some interruption to their training each year, but if we break it down, it should (in theory) be simple to prevent a running injury.

Excessive training load on a tissue (bone, muscle, ligament etc) OR a change in training load on a poorly conditioned tissue leads to injury.

Therefore, to reduce the likelihood of getting injured you need to firstly monitor your training closely (i.e. not ramp up too fast in terms of volume & intensity). But, in addition to this you can better your tissue’s tolerance to a change in training by using basic strategies like recovery (sleep, rest days), nutrition and strength work.
