Hourglass Ultra – Race Report – Mad Hatter Events

As the laps increase, time reduces, and speed becomes survival. The closer to the finish line you get, the further down the rabbit hole you must travel as you pass half marathon, marathon, and ultramarathon distance in an expansive battle with the hourglass.

The race begins with 30 minutes on the clock to cover a 2-mile loop, but each consecutive lap steals one minute from under your feet as time reduces and distance increases. Each successive 2-mile lap requires quicker paces to make the cut off time as the covered miles slowly drain the reserve, making strategy a crucial element to avoid elimination.

As you reach lap 23, with 44 miles in your legs, the course demands a 4 min/mile pace as the cut off time decreases to 8 minutes. At mile 46 the course discovers a victor in the – winner takes all race. To take part in the Hourglass Ultra, runners must be able to endure, have exceptional pacing strategies, be quick on their feet and of course, be … entirely bonkers!
