Harvey Lewis – Last man standing

Big's Backyard ultra

American Ultra athlete Harvey Lewis sets a new course record at this year’s Bigs Back Yard Ultra, completing 85 laps and covering 345 miles in 85 hours. Lewis endured for over three days to become the 2021 ‘last person standing!’ in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, USA.

Bigs Back Yard Ultra is a gruelling creation of the infamous race director, Lazarus ‘Laz’ Lake (Gary Cantrell), a world-renowned event’s organiser that pushes his runners to the very brink of human possibility. The Back Yard Ultra, set in rural Tennessee, compromises a 4.1 (4.166667) mile loop that begins every hour. Competitors must reach the 4.1-mile mark each hour and make it back to the start line, ready to go again, every 60 minutes until only one person is left standing: famously known as ‘the only race with no finish line.

Harvey Lewis chats with URMAG® sub-editor Alex McMUNN about his record-breaking adventure and his excitement to be involved in this year Barkley marathon.
