Gorewear R7 Partial GORE-TEX INFINIUM™ Hooded Jacket – Test & Review

"I appreciate the well-designed ventilation to prevent overheating during intense workouts..."

I started ultra running in late 2019 as I needed a new challenge. Marathon distances and under were not giving me a buzz anymore. I became part of the GB Ultras community as I had mutual friends who were also ultra runners.

Since the world has got back to some normality after Covid, I have entered numerous events at the 50-mile distance. I have run 40+ ultras around North Wales and Cheshire always placing relatively high in the finishing, to my surprise.

Gore partial hooded jacket review

As an ultra runner I run on any terrain possible be that roads, trails and fells sometimes, with lots of elevation. I also like to run in varying conditions from warm, sunny environments to dark, windy and cold raining conditions. Due to these changing conditions and the length of time I’m out running, I need to carry with me a full kit. This needs to be light enough to carry and wear, as well being both effective and efficient enough to cope with the conditions I’m facing.

I recently had the opportunity to review the Gore R7 partial GTX Hooded waterproof running jacket and I must say I’m thoroughly impressed with its performance. The waterproof material truly lives up to its claim, keeping me dry even in heavy downpours and the breathability is excellent.

The fit I would say is relaxed rather than fitted as Gorewear have really small sizings meaning that you will need to go up one or two sizes due to the width of the jacket.

Additionally, it has an integrated hood visor for a close fit, unfortunately the wrist cuffs don’t have any Velcro straps on them to pull it tighter onto your wrist.

I appreciate the well-designed ventilation to prevent overheating during intense workouts and the jacket feels super light with no rustling noise as previous jackets have led to annoyance due to the noise it made.

The front chest pocket is functional and can hold small valuables. However, there are no front hand or back pockets as such, therefore storage is limited and I would recommend a hydration belt or vest on longer runs in order to carry more nutrition/clothing etc.

Overall, the jacket has enabled me to stay out longer in testing conditions and I would recommend the jacket to my fellow ultra running friends.
