Courtney Dauwalter and Guomin Deng win the Mt.Fuji 100 with just 11 minutes between them.

The Mt. Fuji 100, a gruelling endurance race, kicked off yesterday with a stellar lineup of athletes at the base of Japan’s highest peak. The course winds through the dense forests and undulating hills that encircle the mountain, posing a formidable challenge to the participants.

Mount Fuji, 3776 metres high, is an active volcano, although the last eruption was 300 years ago. Its foothills are a trail-running paradise with forests, hills, and beautiful clear lakes. Mt Fuji is also a spiritual landmark, where many pilgrims journey annually.

Courtney Dauwalter had completed the race in 2018 and was eager to return and beat her record, which she smashed by over 3 hours. In 2018, her time was 23:57:48, whereas her new time was 19:21:22.

Knowing that the Gran Canaria World Trail Majors Series will score the two best results, can she say she has already won the series? No. Another runner can win 2 races, and then the tie-breaker is the ITRA algorithm. She hasn’t won it, but it is highly probable that she has, although confirmation will have to wait a while. It would be an honour for the new World Trail Major series, comprised of some of the best trail running races in the world, to have the greatest of all time as its first champion.

With this result, Courtney Dauwalter becomes the first woman to win Mt.FUJI 100 twice and joins Xavier Thevenard, François D’Haene, Julien Chorier, and Dylan Bowman in the exceptional list.

Overall winner Guomin Deng was an exceptional athlete from the outset, leading the race from the first few miles. The Chinese athlete has a decorated race history, coming 20th at the 2022 UTMB and placing in the top 10 in races like the TNF100 Ultra Trail Challenge Moganshan 2024 50km, Anta Hong Kong 100 ultra 2024, and the KAT100 by UTMB® 2023.

Guomin Deng completed the Mt. Fuji 100 in 19:10:34, 10 minutes ahead of second place athlete Guidu Qin (19:20:52).

Athletes continue to cross the finish line, with only these three athletes having finished the race.
