Becoming An Ultrarunner – Grim Reaper Ultra

Running season is in full swing and it's only 12 months to the very first Grim Reaper under new management. Race Director Steve Cole has very kindly asked if I would write up some coaching posts leading up to the event. So, I thought why not add a series of coaching articles to both audiences of the Grim Reaper and Ultrarunner Magazine with the Grim Reaper ultra in mind.

So here I am writing to you all as a coach on the very first edition of articles, which I hope helps those who are new to this fantastic world of ultrarunning. The joys, the friendship and the challenges this sport brings are like no other.

With the event being a year away, I’m sure many of you are not even thinking about the Grim Reaper and more than likely feel it’s way too soon to focus on this event. I for one would argue this, as this is the perfect time to be thinking about your long term goals.

Most of us seasoned ultrarunners will have a pretty good idea of what we will be hoping to do over the next two years and will already be putting together a master plan. We will be using the next few years to prepare and train for that dream event.

Camping Runners are permitted to camp on-site on the Friday and Saturday nights. The camp area will be close to the start/finish line making it ideal for storing supplies for the race.

So, where do we start? Firstly, this article has to focus on our virgin ultrarunners, who are looking to do the Grim Reaper as their first-ever ultra. So, I have to apologise to those ultrarunners who have bagged a few events already. As this article might not be of much use to you but not to worry, in the next article, I will make sure there is something in there for you too, I promise.

So back to the question, where do we start? New runners coming into the world of ultrarunning will come from a background of running marathons or half marathons and are now looking for the next type of torture. Oops, I mean challenge.

For those with a running background of only running half marathons who are reading this and wondering, should I do a marathon first. I will let you into a little secret, I didn’t and you don’t have to. So to that end, the first thing you need to do is book a place at the event.

Booking commits you to the challenge and keeps you focused on training over the next 12 months, especially when training gets tough or when life is trying to get in the way of everything. Steve has also very kindly offered a discount to our readers for his event for 2023. Discount code at the bottom of the article.
